From June 23 to 25, 2026, Intersolar Europe 2026 was held at Messe München in Munich, Germany. This year’s event brought together more than 2,800 exhibitors from over 50 countries and more than 100,000 trade visitors, including around 850 Chinese exhibitors. The first-time participation of leading lithium battery materials suppliers, represented by SEMCORP, also indirectly reflects that the rapidly growing energy storage market is gradually moving closer to the power battery market in scale and industry importance.
At Intersolar Europe 2026, utility-scale storage cells continued to evolve toward higher capacity, with 587 Ah and 588 Ah remaining the main large-capacity cell models on display. However, some manufacturers are trying to increase cell capacity to 648 Ah by making slight adjustments to the length and width of existing 587 Ah and 588 Ah cell form factors while significantly increasing cell height. This can push the capacity of 20-foot energy storage containers up to 6.9 MWh, further reducing the per-unit system costs.
At present, second-tier manufacturers remain somewhat cautious. Given the relatively small size differences among 587 Ah, 588 Ah, and 648 Ah cells, some manufacturers are working to enable shared-line production to reduce the risk of backing the wrong format. Others have chosen to scale back previously planned 588 Ah production lines, with part of the planned capacity potentially shifting toward 648 Ah, though this remains a contingency plan for now. In addition, EVE Energy showcased 702 Ah cells, while Hithium exhibited 1175 Ah cells, further expanding the range of technical possibilities.

According to InfoLink’s show-floor research, amid land transport weight limits outside China, splitting existing 20-foot containerized systems into smaller units to reduce weight has become increasingly necessary. Among leading manufacturers at this year’s exhibition, only Fluence continued to showcase its vertically stacked modular solution, while more manufacturers adopted 10-foot containers as a lightweight product option for compliance.
The advantages of 10-foot containers lie in their format: compared with conventional 20-foot and 40-foot international standard containers, they are more like a downsized standard format. They can also effectively reduce product weight and significantly lower exposure to Europe’s land transport weight limits. In some regional markets where deployment sites are constrained, 10-foot containers may offer a strong fit.
However, manufacturers are taking different lightweighting approaches under the 10-foot container framework. Sunwoda (<24 MT) pursues extreme lightweighting to comply with road transport regulations across nearly all Europe, while CLOU Electronics (39 MT) pushes close to the upper limit of energy density within compliance margins, with single-container capacity reaching 5.15 MWh. This reflects differentiated competitive paths under the same container-size framework.
Mainstream C&I storage products are typically centered around 261 kWh. As C&I storage use cases continue to diversify, manufacturers are also expanding their product portfolios and defining differentiated products for different applications. For example, in large-scale C&I storage and energy-intensive C&I applications above 500 kWh, Dyness, SolaX Power, SOFAR, GoodWe, and other manufacturers have introduced MWh-scale or near-MWh C&I storage products, targeting large C&I users and energy-intensive applications.
At this year’s exhibition, more than half of residential storage manufacturers showcased C&I storage and utility-scale storage products, indicating that the product boundaries of residential storage suppliers are expanding from the residential side toward C&I and grid-side applications. Beyond existing coverage of residential backup power, balcony micro-storage, portable energy storage, and other applications, exhibited products from residential storage manufacturers now span from ultra-low-power residential systems to MW-scale utility-scale ESS. Consumer-electronics-style trends such as plug-and-play design and simplified installation are advancing in parallel with the development of larger-scale ESS.
At Intersolar Europe 2026, LGES’s booth was largely curtained off and semi-open, with no physical products on display. Its low-profile presence here in Europe, compared with its high-profile promotion at the U.S. booth at RE+, broadly reflects its current strategic focus on going all-in on the North American market.
TotalEnergies has built vertical integration across the energy storage value chain through Saft for system integration and manufacturing and Kyon Energy for project development, extending from system integration and manufacturing to storage project development, operation, and maintenance. Its Germany project pipeline has now reached 1.6 GWh.
Octopus Energy, an emerging player in energy technology, also appeared at this year’s exhibition. Ahead of the show, the company launched its self-developed Nook residential storage series at the Energy Tech Summit and established a joint venture (JV) with CATL to develop a heavy-duty electric truck battery-swap network, continuing to expand its pool of distributed energy resources (DERs).
As end-use resources such as residential storage, EV charging, and battery swapping continue to connect to the platform, Octopus Energy is expected to aggregate them into virtual power plants (VPPs) and participate in power market trading through its Kraken AI energy operating system, gradually forming a close-loop commercial model of “DER asset expansion—VPP aggregation—power market monetization.”
Intersolar Europe 2026 clearly outlined several key themes shaping the energy storage industry. On the cell side, 587 Ah and 588 Ah remain the mainstay models, while 648 Ah and other formats are regaining traction. On the system side, utility-scale storage products in Europe continue to evolve amid the dual pressures of capacity expansion and transport weight compliance, with 10-foot containers becoming a new benchmark for lightweighting. Manufacturers are also competing through differentiated energy density strategies within transport compliance margins.
At the industry level, residential storage manufacturers are intensively expanding into C&I and utility-scale storage, as competition shifts from specialization in individual subsegments toward comprehensive capabilities across application scenarios. From uncertainty over cell formats to system-level restructuring, and from more granular use cases to cross-sector convergence, the energy storage industry is accelerating its evolution through multi-path innovation and broader application-scenario coverage, driven simultaneously by technology iteration, market expansion, and geopolitical tug-of-war.
